Flag Day Monument groundbreaking ceremony - 6.14.22

Time: 6:00 PM

Location: Peg Bond Center, 151 N. Island Ave.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be celebrated to commemorate a new Flag Day Monument from 6-7:30 pm on June 14 at the Peg Bond Center, located downtown along the Batavia Riverwalk.

In addition to the groundbreaking, the Batavia Community Band will perform patriotic arrangements and Fox Valley Patriotic Organization members will share information about building the monument.

Members of the FVPO have worked since 2016 to raise funding necessary to build a national-caliber monument near the Peg Bond Center, Riverwalk and City Hall.

Each year on Flag Day, which is June 14, Batavia honors Dr. Bernard Cigrand, who worked downtown as a dentist for decades. Dr. Cigrand was one of the original advocates for creating a national day of recognition for the American flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson agreed, proclaiming a day each year to celebrate.
