It’s thyme to spring into gardening with the Batavia Park District!
Tue March 23, 2021
After being cooped up inside for far longer than just the winter, spring planting is just around the corner! The Batavia Park District is offering a cornucopia of active adult gardening classes, sprinkling in a bushel of fun along with some sage advice.
This bountiful array of classes surely will spark a creative streak, and spots remain open for these super sessions.
- Silk Flower Arrangement
Flowers soon will be popping up in gardens and decorative planters in yards and throughout the community, but too soon those will wither. Why not create a seasonal silk flower arrangement for spring, which will last well into the sunny days of summer? The cost is $5 per person, and all supplies are included. These sessions are scheduled for 4 to 5 p.m. for the April 8 or May 6 classes, hosted at the Eastside Community Center, 14 N. Van Buren St. Ages 18+. Register here.
- Seed Starting
Who isn’t craving those juicy, garden-fresh tomatoes right about now? West Chicago-based We Grow Dreams will help us begin growing a few vegetable seeds for use after the spring thaw, including tomatoes, bell peppers, kale, and Swiss chard. Talk about sowing success! What a great start to your summer garden! The cost is $7 per person, and containers, soil, and seeds are included. This session is slated for 10 to 11 a.m. on April 9 at The Lodge at Laurelwood, 800 N. River St. Ages 16+. Register here.
- Herbs
Propagating herbs from cuttings (such as lavender, rosemary, sage, mint, thyme, and oregano) can be easier than you think, and this class will show how to reap those rewards! Take home a single, 4 ½-inch pot with an established herb inside, as well as up to five additional pots containing the cuttings from that original herb. The cost is $9 per person, and pots, soil, herbs, rooting hormone, and a container for your herbs that need to be rooted in water all are provided. This class is scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. April 22 at The Lodge at Laurelwood, 800 N. River St. Ages 16+. Register here.
- Container Planting Party
Which plants work well together? Learn all about the nuances of color combinations and growing conditions, and take home a beautiful creation that will be captivating all season long. The cost is $5 per person. Bring your own containers and plants and/or purchase these on site from We Grow Dreams. You’ll party from 1 to 3 p.m. on May 11 at We Grow Dreams, 1055 W. Washington St., West Chicago. Ages 16+. Register here.
