Celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month with Batavia Park District

Tue June 25, 2024

This July, Batavia Park District will help you unplug, unwind and explore Batavia’s parks and amenities. July is National Park and Recreation month, and the park district is celebrating with a variety of activities for residents of all ages and abilities, including a month-long scavenger hunt, popsicles in the park with mascot Bruce the Spruce, a #BataviaUnplugged social media contest and a free night at Hall Quarry Beach.

Parks and Recreation month is an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) to get residents outdoors and explore the resources in their local parks. This year’s theme is “Where You Belong.”

The park district is inviting community members to share their experiences, memories and stories about what parks and recreation mean to them through a variety of community events.

Bruce the Spruce Scavenger Hunt – June 28-July 31. Clues will be released starting June 28. Fill out a letter card sheet found on the park district’s National Park and Rec Month page with each letter found. Completed letter cards can be brought to the Civic Center where participants will then be entered to win a prize.

Popsicles in the Park – July 9, noon to 1 p.m. Find Bruce at Engstrom Park for a photo op, grab a popsicle and a sticker and play fun games.

Windmill City Fest – July 12-14. Enjoy a weekend outdoors with food and drink, great music, carnival rides, games and activities at the Batavia Riverwalk.

Illinois Unplugged – July 13. Use the hashtag #BataviaUnplugged and post a picture of yourself doing your favorite outdoor activity around Batavia for a chance to win a prize. Deadline is July 18 at noon. Visit UnplugIllinois.com for details.

How much candy is in the Jar – July 17. Visit the park district table at River Rhapsody and make your guess. Prizes will be awarded.

Free night at Hall Quarry Beach – July 26, 5-7 p.m. Celebrate the end of the month with Bruce at the Quarry.

“July’s activities are the perfect opportunity for residents to not only explore our parks but also learn how Batavia is stronger, more vibrant and resilient,” said Lori McDonald, assistant director of community recreation at the park district.
