Welcome to the Batavia Park District - "Committed to providing fun, safe and innovative open space and recreational opportunities that will enrich the quality of life for our residents."

The Batavia Park District has been providing memorable experiences in parks and recreation for the community since its inception in 1969. Nestled in the scenic Fox River Valley and just 45 miles west of Chicago, Batavia serves a thriving, growing community 26,000 people strong. Batavia boasts a windmill heritage, rich in history and steeped in traditional family values. Batavia is a popular place to settle because of its close proximity to the river, trails, thoroughfares, and direct access to Chicago. Add to those elements the family-oriented nature of the city, small hometown feel, and old-fashioned values. Founded in 1833, it is the oldest city in Kane County.

The Batavia Park District was established in 1969 through voter referendum. Since its establishment, the Park District maintains and operates approximately 400 acres, comprised of 40 sites, an in-line skating/skateboarding park, a unique aquatic facility, a museum and a multitude of baseball and soccer fields and tennis and basketball courts. The Park District offers nearly 2,000 programs each year and serves roughly 95,000 participants through various recreational, arts, and environmental programs. Vibrant and charming, Batavia's Riverwalk (named one of the Midwest region's "Top 10" by the Chicago Tribune) is known for being a unique recreational area in the downtown area. The Batavia Park District is committed to excellence and is a leader in providing leisure experiences that enhance the quality of life for our community.

Thank you for visiting, we hope to see you soon!

When the Batavia Park District was created in 1969, it operated for 18 months without tax funding, owned no parkland, and offered just a handful of recreational programs.

Today, the Park District operates with a budget of $7.4 million with a total budget of $11.9 million, manages nearly 400 acres of parkland and serves approximately 100,000 patrons annually. It is an important contributor to the community's social, recreational and economic life.

Since its establishment, the District has done the following:

  • Kept pace with patron requests for recreational and leisure activities by offering hundreds of programs quarterly and annually for everyone from tots to octogenarians
  • Created a park within walking distance of most homes
  • Pioneered the development of bike trails which established Batavia as the hub of a tri-county bike trail system (in cooperation with Geneva, St. Charles, and Kane County)
  • Participated in a unique public-private collaboration to create the Batavia Riverwalk
  • Purchased and renovated a landmark structure which is now called the Eastside Community Center
