Together, we nurture a greener, healthier future

The Batavia Park District is committed to eco-friendly practices that lighten our environmental footprint and boost community well-being. Explore our green efforts below:

District-Wide Green Initiatives

  • LED Lighting Upgrade
Replacing incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs reduces energy use, waste, and maintenance.
  • Scrap Metal Recycling
Metal waste is collected, stored, and recycled for profit—saving resources and reducing landfill impact.
  • Computer/Electronics Recycling
All electronic waste is processed via Kane County’s recycling program to ensure safe disposal and material recovery.
  • Programmable Thermostats
New thermostats regulate building temperatures only during use, cutting energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Photocells & Time Clocks for Exterior Lighting
Outdoor lighting operates only when needed—saving energy, reducing light pollution, and lowering maintenance.
  • Battery Recycling Program
Disposable batteries are recycled through local collection to prevent groundwater contamination.
  • Printer Cartridge Recycling
Used cartridges are recycled via a local scout troop—reducing pollution while teaching green values.
  • Upgrade to High-Efficiency HVAC Systems
New systems use eco-friendly refrigerants, offering better energy efficiency and reduced emissions.
  • Sustainable Capital Improvements
Capital funds are strategically invested in green infrastructure such as permeable pavement, rain gardens, and energy-efficient lighting, heating, and cooking upgrades to reduce environmental impact.

  • Paper Reduction & Digital Processes
Two-sided printing, electronic communications, digital invoicing, and comprehensive recycling programs significantly reduce paper consumption across the District.

  • Preventative Fleet Maintenance
Regular engine tune-ups and scheduled preventative maintenance improve fuel efficiency, extend equipment life, and reduce emissions from District vehicles and machinery.

  • Responsible Disposal of Automotive Materials
All vehicle fluids and engine components are disposed of properly to prevent environmental contamination and ensure regulatory compliance.

  • No-Idling Policy
A no-idling policy is enforced to reduce fuel consumption, air pollution, and unnecessary wear on District vehicles.

  • Natural Resource Best Management Practices
Dedicated funding supports restoration of natural areas, invasive species control, wildlife habitat enhancement, and improved stormwater management.

  • Native Landscaping Practices
Native plant species are incorporated into all landscaping projects to support local ecosystems, reduce water use, and improve long-term sustainability.

  • Plastic Waste Reduction Efforts
The District is actively reducing single-use plastic water bottles by installing water bottle refill stations in parks and at special events.

  • Recycling Infrastructure Improvements
Recycling and trash receptacles throughout the parks are being upgraded to better encourage proper waste separation and increase recycling participation.
