Batavia Park District's upgrades at Clark Island includes outdoor fitness court
May 23, Batavia, IL - Exciting upgrades are underway at Batavia's Clark Island Recreation Area that will bring new and unique recreation options for the community. Batavia Park District's planned upgrades include an outdoor fitness court with outdoor equipment and flex fitness area, pollinator garden, new fishing outcroppings, bike pump track and a new skate park with seating.
Batavia Park District developed a plan to add outdoor fitness options to Clark Island in response to its 2023 Community Needs Assessment. Residents requested more outdoor fitness options in a park created for all ages.
To meet that request, the park district is installing a National Fitness Campaign fitness court at Clark Island. With outdoor fitness equipment on one side and a padded surface on the other, residents will have options to attend park district fitness and yoga classes or use the equipment on their own free of charge.
The first phase of construction for this project has started at Clark Island with removal of playground equipment that was scheduled for this year. The park district partners with Kids Around the World, a nonprofit that refurbishes the equipment and ships it to overseas communities in need to be installed and enjoyed by children in countries across the world.
The new fitness court will occupy the north side of the park. The new pump track will be south of the skate park. Construction of the project will be completed in early fall.
The Clark Island redevelopment plan will be funded in part by a $600,000 Open Space Land Acquisition grant from Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Park District's capital development budget, along with a grant from National Fitness Campaign
